Rainsford Island is purchased by Boston.

The island is “to be used and improved for a publick hospital for the reception and accommodation of such sick and infectious persons as shall be sent there by order.” The state purchases the island for use as an almshouse in 1852,* then the city re-purchases it for the same purpose in 1872.*
